The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
